Department of Agriculture,
NIILM University, Kaithal, Haryana
Agriculture provides numerous benefits to society, ranging from enhanced food security to environmental sustainability. Biotechnology, in particular, plays a key role in modernizing agriculture, and Dr. Pooja, a Biotechnologist and Assistant Professor at the university, firmly believed in its potential. She recognized that biotechnology could help improve crop productivity while minimizing environmental damage. Pooja always emphasized to her students how biological modification, organic farming practices, and soil nutrient enhancement could significantly improve agricultural outcomes. By applying these advanced methods, she showed how farmers could increase yields, reduce the need for harmful chemicals, and contribute to a more sustainable agricultural future.
Her passion for the subject was contagious, but there was also something deeply personal that drove Pooja. Agriculture wasn’t just her profession; it was her calling. She often thought about how every plant, every seed, and every piece of land had a story to tell. Her work in biotechnology was a way of answering that call of helping the world finds balance between growth and sustainability. However, there was one thing she kept to herself, a truth that often weighed on her heart: despite her successes in the field, she had yet to experience the connection she craved with someone who shared her vision-someone who truly understood her passion for agriculture.
At the same university, there was another person, Vikram Singh, an Agronomist from Siwan village, Kaithal district. Vikram wasn’t just a knowledgeable expert in sustainable agriculture; he was also known for his kind heart and caring nature. Whether it was helping a struggling student understand a concept or offering a reassuring word to a farmer facing crop failure, Vikram always made time for those in need. He believed that agriculture was not just about science it was about people.
Growing up in a farming family, Vikram had witnessed firsthand the struggles and triumphs of agriculture. The knowledge passed down from generations had shaped his approach to farming, and he carried that wisdom into his academic and professional life. His deep empathy made him beloved among his students and colleagues. He was the kind of person who would stay behind after class to answer questions, visit farms to provide practical guidance, or simply lend a listening ear to anyone who needed it.
Despite his dedication to his work, there was something else that occupied Vikram’s heart-his admiration for Dr. Pooja. Every time their paths crossed, whether in the hallway or during university lectures, his heart would race. He was captivated not just by her intellect but by her dedication to biotechnology and her vision for a sustainable agricultural future. However, Vikram’s feelings were complex, layered with a deep yearning that he couldn’t express. His emotions were like seeds planted in the soil, hoping to sprout but unsure if they would ever bloom.
He had always kept his feelings to himself. The idea of disrupting their professional relationship terrified him. He feared that if he were to confess, it might shatter the careful balance they had cultivated as colleagues. His heart longed for Pooja's affection, but he couldn't risk putting that hope into words. It was like nurturing a fragile crop—he was too afraid to disturb it and too uncertain whether it would thrive.
Simranjit Singh, Vikram’s best friend and an Assistant Professor of Plant Breeding and Genetics at the university, knew about Vikram’s feelings. Simranjit had seen the way Vikram looked at Pooja, his eyes softening whenever she spoke about biotechnology or sustainable agriculture. Their friendship went back to their childhood in Kaithal, and Vikram knew he could turn to Simranjit with anything.
One evening, as the sun set and the university campus was quiet, Vikram opened up to Simranjit, his voice thick with emotion. "I think I’ve developed stronger feelings for Dr. Pooja. She speaks about agriculture and biotechnology with such passion that it makes my heart ache. I want to be the person she sees when she talks about these things. But I’m afraid that if I tell her, it will ruin everything. What if it changes things between us?" His voice was filled with uncertainty, his emotions running deep like a river waiting to flood.
Simranjit, understanding the weight of his friend’s words, placed a hand on Vikram’s shoulder. "Vikram, my friend, just like we know in agriculture, to see good results, we need time, patience, and proper nourishment. You can’t let fear stop you from sharing what’s in your heart. Just like crops need the right care to grow, relationships need honesty and vulnerability to thrive. If you don’t take the chance, you might always wonder what could have been."
Vikram looked at Simranjit, his heart heavy with the weight of his feelings. His best friend’s words stirred something deep within him. He realized that the more he held onto his unspoken emotions, the more it felt like he was suffocating the possibility of something beautiful-something that could bloom if only he gave it the right environment.
A few days later, Vikram decided to act on his feelings. He met Dr. Pooja in the university’s garden, where the air was cool and the flowers were in full bloom. The peaceful surroundings seemed to calm his racing heart, but he still felt the nervous energy that surged within him.
"Dr. Pooja," Vikram began, his voice shaking slightly, "Just as in biotechnology, we modify crops for better yield, in relationships, too, we need proper nourishment and care. Time and patience are essential. If we invest the right effort, relationships can grow stronger, just like crops do in fertile soil."
Pooja, taken aback by his sincerity, looked at him with soft eyes. There was gentle warmth in her gaze that made Vikram’s heart flutter. She had always admired Vikram’s kind-hearted nature, his dedication to agriculture, and the way he always put others before himself.
"You’re right, Vikram," she said quietly, her voice filled with understanding. "In biotechnology and agriculture, we use the right tools, patience, and time to achieve success. But relationships just like crops-need care and understanding too."
Vikram’s heart raced as he continued, "I’ve always admired you, Dr. Pooja. Your work in biotechnology has inspired me deeply. I want to share that same passion with you, and I wanted you to know that… I care for you more than just as a colleague."
There was a pause as Pooja looked at him, her expression thoughtful. For a moment, time seemed to slow, and Vikram feared he had overstepped. But then Pooja smiled softly, warmth filling her gaze. "Vikram," she said gently, "I’m touched by your honesty. I, too, have admired your work in agriculture and how you approach it with such care. Relationships, like agriculture, do require time and patience, and they can flourish when nurtured with understanding."
Vikram felt a wave of relief wash over him. The weight that had been pressing on his chest for so long began to lift. He realized that just like agriculture—which requires care, time, and patience to yield a successful harvest—relationships too need the same elements to thrive. Their connection had grown stronger, just like the crops they nurtured in the fields.
As they continued their work together, Vikram and Pooja deepened their understanding of both agriculture and biotechnology. They recognized the profound interconnection between nature and relationships-required patience, nurturing, and a willingness to work through challenges. Their bond began to mirror the principles they valued in their fields: a commitment to growth, sustainability, and balance.
The benefits of agriculture extended far beyond the fields-they weren’t just about growing food, but about nurturing the world and the people around them. Whether it was sustainable farming practices or biotechnology, Vikram and Pooja now understood that, much like in their relationship, agriculture required the right care, commitment, and nourishment to truly flourish.
